Most of us don’t think much about how learning actually works. We just notice when we’re stuck or when something finally clicks. This model maps the four stages every skill, belief, or habit passes through on its way to becoming second nature.
Learning something new always means spending time not knowing, and most of us are uncomfortable there. My natural inclination is to feel unsettled in those moments. Do I admit I don’t know, or do I just fake it?
I was sitting in a university class working through a belief assessment when I hit a statement: “To consider myself worthy, I can’t make mistakes.” It stopped me cold. I’d been living by that belief for years without ever naming it. That’s Stage 1: not a flaw, just a blind spot we haven’t been shown yet.
(The Belief Assessment is in the toolbox.)
Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. That’s both the gift and the difficulty here. You know something needs to change, but you don’t yet have the skill or the pattern to change it. Most people want to rush past this stage. The honest advice: don’t. Sitting with what you’ve discovered is what makes the next step real.
This is where the actual work lives. You know what to do, but it takes effort every single time: catching an old pattern, making a different choice, trying something new that still feels deliberate. This stage takes longer than we want. The 1% philosophy was made for here: you don’t have to master it today, just get a little better than yesterday.
Eventually the new way becomes the natural way. You stop thinking about it. Someone asks how you stay so calm, or how you handle things so differently than you used to, and you almost don’t know what to say, because it doesn’t feel like effort anymore. You’ve changed. Everyone who’s learned to drive, or play an instrument, or find their footing after a hard season knows exactly what this feels like.
You can use this tool as you make the personal changes you want in your life. One step and one percent at a time.
What’s one area of your life where you suspect there’s a gap you can’t quite see yet?
Here’s the honest catch: Stage 1 is almost impossible to see from the inside. That’s not a character flaw. It’s how the model works. And it’s usually what a good conversation surfaces. Sit with the question. Then, if something comes up, bring it.
